Historic Waihohonu Hut Maintenance Field Trip

Come join us for our first 2023 Project Tongariro field trip to the historic Waihohonu Hut - we’re going to give this special hut some TLC!

Saturday 15 April 2023

Project Tongariro was integral in the restoration and interpretation of the historic Waihohonu Hut, which was once a key stopover on the Grand Tourist Route into Tongariro National Park - so it’s wonderful we are able to offer this experience to our members!

In 2004, with funds donated by Project Tongariro, new interpretive displays were installed both inside and outside the hut to mark the centennial of its construction.

Jobs we will be undertaking include wire brushing the old flaking paint away from the bottom of the hut and giving the exterior a fresh coat of paint. Cleaning the interpretive signs, both inside and out the hut, along with a bit of weed pulling focusing on invasive weeds around the hut.

You can read more about the history of Waihohonu Hut here.

Numbers are limited to 12 participants and Project Tongariro members will be given priority, so get in quick and register now!

If you are interested in becoming a Project Tongariro member, you can sign up here.
